Amateur Baseball: Aces roll Bears in CCVL contest

Jumping on the Cannon Falls Bears early, the Red Wing Aces came off the Red Wing Athletic Field with a 14-9 Classic Cannon Valley League victory on Sunday.

Five Red Wing players – led by Adam Thygesen’s 4-for-6 three-RBI, three-run performance – finished with two or more hits on Sunday as the team collected 16 hits over nine innings. Mike Stegora went 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI while Dave Jenson went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI. Steve Boldt and Jimmy Bohmbach each collected two hits in the victory, and Alex Quiding drove in a pair of runs for the Aces.

Red Wing opened the game with an 8-0 lead after two innings. Cannon Falls was able to make it an 8-5 game after the top of the fourth before the Aces added a run in the bottom half, followed by four in the fifth and another run in the sixth.

For the Bears, Braxton Lindow went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Ryan Brintnall and Matt Prink each added two hits, and Zeke Williams went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a pair of runs. In total, Cannon Falls finished the game with 11 hits and 16 runners left on base.

Brady Schroeder got the win for the Aces after going 5 2/3 innings. Tyler Quinlan was charged with the loss for Cannon Falls after giving up eight runs in 1 1/3 innings.

The Aces will host Pine Island for a non-league game Friday while the Bears will host Eagan on Wednesday.

Friday

Elko 5, Red Wing 0

Led by a strong eight-inning performance on the mound from Tyler Brekke, Elko came to the Red Wing Athletic Field Friday and shut out the Aces 5-0.

Brekke struck out three and gave up six hits and zero walks in the victory. Relief pitcher Dylan Thomas came in and threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure the win.

At the plate, Kyle Kraska went 2-for-5 with an RBI while Gordon Kappers drove in a pair of runs and reached home once for the Express.

Mike Stegora and Mitch Matter each collected two hits for the Aces. Adam Thygesen and Alex Quiding had the other two hits for Red Wing. On the mound, Aaron Johnson was hit with the loss after striking out eight with four walks, six hits and four runs (all earned) in 5 2/3 innings.
