Aces beat Mudhens in Memorial Day showdown

With an early-July matchup coming to Red Wing, it was the Aces who hit the road for Monday’s Memorial Day matchup against Miesville. After some late-inning heroics on Friday, Red Wing instead held off the big inning and the Mudhens, 5-3.

Aaron Johnson picked up the win, pitching 7 1/3 innings. Miesville scored three runs against Johnson, though only one was earned. Johnson walked four and struck out seven before handing the game over to Brady Schroeder in the eighth inning. Schroeder allowed one hit over the final 1 2/3 innings.

Zach Garner and Mitch Matter had RBIs in the first, with Garner working a run-scoring walk, and Matter knocking in a run on fielder’s choice.

Matter added an RBI single in the third, and scored a run on Josh Thygesen’s bases-loaded walk in the fifth. Mike Stegora had the Aces final run, crossing the plate on Steven Boldt’s groundout.

Charles Bruchu had a third-inning RBI single for the Mudhens, scoring later in the inning on an error. Two walks and two singles in the seventh put Miesville back in the game, but only one runs scored when Alex LaShomb touched the plate on another Red Wing error.

Steve Maher was saddled with the loss after pitching the first inning. Andrew Yetzer and Deryk Marks each threw two innings for Miesville, giving up five hits and six walks between them.

Friday

Red Wing 9, Pine Island 8

Mike Stegora’s three-run double in the bottom of the ninth not only cleared the bases, it emptied the stands as Red Wing came from a three-run deficit to beat Pine Island, 9-8.

Kyle Blahnik opened the inning by being hit by a pitch. Alex Quiding then reached on an error with Jimmy Bohmbach and Mitch Matter coming through with consecutive one-out singles. That set the table for Stegora to end the game with a shot to right-center field.

The Aces took a 1-0 lead in the first, and added single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings. But the Pioneers struck for eight runs in the top of the seventh. Pine Island had three walks, four singles and a double in the seventh, including Brandon Ritz clearing the bases with a two-bagger to center.

Red Wing’s Justin Cunningham was pulled after 6 1/3 innings, leaving having allowed six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks. Cunningham struck out six batters before giving way to Isaac Oeltjen.

Oeltjen pitched through the eighth, giving up two runs, both earned, on a hit and three walks. Aaron Johnson picked up the victory after throwing a perfect top of the ninth.

Stegora, Adam Thygesen, Steve Boldt and Mitch Matter each had two hits for the Aces, with Boldt adding two RBI. Brian Sorum and Jordan Pin had two hits for Pine Island, and both had two RBI.

Pin took the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, in 4 1/3 innings.
