Aces offense continues to Roll

With five games between Section 1B games, the Red Wing Aces have started to tear the cover off the ball.

Going off for 14 hits on Thursday, the Aces pounded the Kewaskum (Wisconsin) A’s in a 10-0 seven-inning victory at the Red Wing Athletic Field.

In the midst of a three-game win streak, Red Wing has outscored opponents 33-2 and has collected 14 hits in each of the three games.

“We’ve been hitting the ball really well the last couple games. Hopefully we can carry that over into Section 1B,” said third baseman Kyle Blahnik, who went 3-for-5 while driving in four runs on Thursday.

The offensive onslaught began right away with four first-inning hits, capped off by a two-run, two-out single by Blahnik. The bats continued to crush the ball in the second with four more hits. Going through 11 batters, Steve Boldt and Blahnik came up with the biggest hits of the frame with both cranking out two-run singles.

“My swing’s been feeling better the last couple weeks,” Blahnik said.

Josh Thygesen brought in another run after a bases-loaded walk to put the score at 7-0.

“We were able to get some good at-bats at the beginning. It seemed like their pitcher (Bill Miller) couldn’t throw anything but fastballs,” said Boldt, who went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. “We started off hot but we kind of got into a lull after the first two (innings). We have to keep that intensity up every inning.”

The Aces’ offense tapered off for a few innings, but JT Cunningham continued his dominance on the mound. Cunningham gave up just two hits in five innings, striking out five while facing just 16 batters on the way to the victory.

“He was mixing pitches well in and out like he has the last two years for us,” said Boldt, the team’s assistant manager.

Red Wing put up a pair of runs in the fifth after Adam Thygesen scored on a wild pitch and Mitch Matter came home on an RBI single by Zach Garner. Then in the seventh, Josh Thygesen ended the game early with a single to left field that allowed a sliding Garner to reach home, putting the 10-run rule into play.

Adam Thygesen finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Matter, Garner, Josh Thygesen and Alex Quiding each collected two hits apiece in the victory.

The Aces (9-6) played host to Plainview-Elgin-Millville on Friday. Results were unavailable at press time.

Red Wing will play a road game at River Falls on Wednesday July 1 before returning to Section 1B, and Classic Cannon Valley League, action on Saturday July 4 against Miesville at the ATH.
